The Story
The JET JWP‑13BTHH 13" Portable Thickness Planer pairs a compact benchtop footprint with a true helical cutterhead to deliver smoother surfaces and quieter operation compared to straight‑knife designs. It is built for woodworkers who want consistent thickness control while reducing tearout on figured or difficult grain.
The helical cutterhead uses 30 four‑sided carbide inserts arranged in a spiral pattern. Each insert can be rotated to a fresh cutting edge, extending usable life while maintaining cutting quality over time. This design also spreads cutting forces more evenly, which helps lower operating noise and reduce vibration during planing. Feed rate is held at 24.6 FPM to keep stock moving steadily through the cutterhead without forcing the cut.
Thickness adjustment is handled through a top‑mounted crank with a calibrated scale and depth‑of‑cut gauge. One full revolution of the handwheel moves the cutterhead 1/16", allowing controlled, repeatable changes between passes. Integrated infeed and outfeed tables support stock as it enters and exits the planer, helping manage longer boards and minimize handling issues.
